Plot
After decades of solitude, a wealthy family living in a salt mine meets a stranger. Joshua Oppenheimer described the film as an exploration of whether we as humans can reach a place where our guilt is too great to shake off the past. I saw this film at the Woodstock Film Festival and went in cold turkey – not knowing the premise or the director. I saw some solid actors in it and thought, why not? This film was mesmerizing. The acting was incredible. The scenes were stunning. I couldn’t take my eyes off George MacKay (1917). Tilda Swinton and Michael Shannon are always good. I don’t want to say too much and I wish the IMDb description would say a little less, but please try watching this film if you are open to creative and impactful storytelling. The profound themes of human frailty are skillfully explored, and I was incredibly moved by this work. I dare say it may be my film of the year.
