As the world teeters on the brink of annihilation, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and destiny to save millions of Jews from genocide. Dietrich Bonhoeffer has been accused of involvement in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler, depicted in the film Operación Valquiria (2008), after Hans von Dohnanyi was accused of being the “spiritual leader” of the attempt. There is no evidence that either man was involved in that particular event and that it was merely a feat to eliminate both of them. Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protest nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no avail. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be discredited, indeed, the fool can counter with criticism and, if they are undeniable, they can simply be ignored as trivial exceptions. I agree with other reviews that have found two major flaws in this film.AUTHOR. The movie tells us (in the scripts) that B has written many books on faith. Yet the movie itself never shows him writing, publishing, or discussing books. The most we see is B writing his thoughts in a diary. ASSASSIN. Yes, historically there have been many failed plots to assassinate Hitler, and indeed the movie shows us such a plot. But there are no facts in the movie that show B was ever arrested or charged for this. This is a very serious gap in history. CONCLUSION. I’m sorry, but I think B deserves a better script and a more lively story. The movie Valkarie with Tom Cruise (a non-religious story) depicting a failed assassination attempt on Hitler is a good example. The Bonhoeffer movie could have used a lot more action to break up what were boring conversations about faith in the face of evil.
